Journalists have an important role in exposing injustices and holding powerful individuals, corporations, NGOs, and governments accountable. Through their investigations and reportage, journalists shine a light on the impacts of an integrated, global system that displaces Indigenous peoples, ravages the land, accelerates the climate crisis, and amplifies the fault lines of modernity. By telling the story of these realities in all their complexities and contradictions, we can collectively issue a last warning and say "No more!" to these injustices.
Please draw attention to the protests of Indigenous peoples in Brazil
No matter which credible newspapers, websites, magazines, or social media channels you are writing or reporting for, we need to shine a spotlight on the threats to Indigenous rights and the growing catastrophe of environmental destruction in the Amazon. This is not just a crisis for that region, but one for all people and the entire planet.
If you are a journalist, we invite you to do the following:
- Notify your editors that your media outlet needs to cover this crisis as urgently and thoroughly as possible. So far, very little has been published about the upcoming Supreme Federal Court decision, the Indigenous protests in Brasilia or the debates on pending bills in Congress.
- Write articles and op-eds; and publish investigative and “explainer” articles. Make videos for social media that explain the crisis at both a human and global scale.
- Use your networks and lists of contacts to spread word about this campaign. Get your readers/viewers and colleagues to watch the videos, and encourage them to pass information about this crucial moment to as many other journalists as they can (see a list of additional resources here). Use mailing lists, social media and any other platform that you have access to, to contact as many people as possible.
